Infringement on Health Freedom: How far will it go?

Guidelines have been drafted by the FDA to regulate the Industry of Complimentary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). Why are they doing this? Well according to them its because the NCCAM (National Center for Complimentary and Alternatice Medicine), says that 1/3 of American adults are now using some form of CAM and visits to CAM are now exceeding visits to primary care physicians. (Yea Natural Health!) There has also been an increase in imported products associated with CAM. Whch for others translates into the parmaceutical companies are loosing money and are lobbying for these regulations to pass. As for the FDA Act and Public Health Service (PHS) Act, any cosmetics, devices, dietary supplements, drugs, food and food additives are regulated by the FDA. Which means that the massage given to the patient cannot be regulated but the oil, rocks or table you use can be. Something is considered to be a drug or medical device if it is used in the “diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment or prevention of disease in man or animal.” Which is fine in some senses, not everyone should be able to use accupunture needles, but what does it mean for raw juices. A direct quote from the draft discusses the direct effect on raw juices: “If a person decides to produce and sell raw vegetable juice for use in juice therepy to promote optimal health, that product is a food subject to the requirements for foods in the Act and FDA regulations, including the Hazard Analysis and Crital Control Point (HACCP) system requirements for juices in 21 CFR part 120. If the juice therepy is intended for use as part of the disease treatment regimen instead of general wellness, the vegetable juice would also be subject to regulation as a drug under the act.” The HACCP system includes the requirement of pasteurization of all bottled juices which is the reason why if you are doing a juice fast, it’s important to juice your own fruits and veggies as the pasteurization killls the living enzymes in the juices (basically all the nutritional value) So, what does this mean? Consumer health advocate Mike Adams in his article, Health Freedom Action Alert: FDA attempting to regulate supplements, herbs and juices., says that these products like nutritional supplements, herbs, essential oils, homeopathic medicines, vegetable juices, and massage rocks may actually be outlawed and “regulated out of existence” and calls for us to write a letter to the FDA against this attempt at regulation. I wanted to do my own investigation so I called the office to ask them what it meant. I talked to Andre Perlloni, Consumer Safety Officer at the FDA. He told me that they are just guidelines which already exist and are put out just to remind the companies that sell these products and have no legal binding. That makes more sense. I can’t see the American people allowing the outlaw of the herbs, oils and massage rocks which even if they don’t help you certainly won’t hurt you. Especially when there are over the counter drugs which are way harmful and easily available. So for now you can still go buy your favorite lavender essential oil and use it to help your insomnia and feel good that you can take care of your own health. I truly believe that more and more people are awakening and if nothing else alternative medicine will become even more readily available as companies try to keep up with the demand. Nutrition- Cure for Learning Disorder?

Just as my baby was about to turn 1, I decided it was time to lose the 60+ pounds I had gained during pregnancy. I decided, along with excersizes like yoga and pilates, to cut out simple carbohydrates and include lots of fresh and natural foods, free of chemicals and dyes like vegetables, fruits and other foods high in fiber and low in fat into my diet. 2 years later, I am finally down to my pre-pregnancy weight and I feel healthier than ever. In the process I learned something extremely important that I didn’t expect. I learned how to use nutrition as medicine.
As a teenager, I was one of the many of my generation to be diagnosed with ADD (Attention Defecit Disorder). The medication I was prescribed created a nightmare of depression, anxiety and dependancy for me. But through the process of losing weight I discovered that the food I was feeding myself was absolutely more than half of the solution to my “learning disability.” Cutting out sugar and simple carbohydrates and replacing it with more fresh and natural foods, free of chemicals and dyes like raw juices, created and maintained what medication could not. I was suddenly more focused. There was a drastic improvement in my mental clarity and I was able to operate more efficiently in every aspect of my life.
Today my memory is working great, but I seldom remember that I was ever diagnosed with ADD. I now know nutrition is the tool that allows me to manage it.

Spring Clean!

oct18 041It doesn’t quite feel like spring yet, but we are getting our bodies ready by detoxing from the toxins we’ve built up over the winter. Recently, we held a weekend fast which was a nice way for the women to start off fresh this spring. Today it has begun to warm up and we’ll be ready for the climate changes with cleansed bodies and minds! Then this week we held another spring cleaning where we did a more in depth cleansing and workshops on how to make the raw juices and take our food consciously. We’ve also recently added ayurvedic consultations where the guests can learn their dosha and find out what diet they should follow for their body type. Many new things are happening and we’re excited for the weather to warm up. We’ll also be updating this blog more often so keep posted and stay healthy and happy!
